Musician Abbie plays the last rose of summer on the harps, singing the lyrics: "Tis the last rose of summer, Left blooming alone; All her lovely companions; Are faded and gone". She then introduces herself and talks about her experience with NOYO. (Abbie) I'm Abbie and I am a member of the National Open Youth Orchestra. I've enjoyed music since aged four. I'm a singer, pianist, harpist plus, I like recording as a hobby and that's great fun and that's me in a nutshell really. (Question on screen) What's your musical background? (Abbie) I learned the piano at school and then I moved onto music at Trinity music school on Saturday, each Saturday, and I've sang in various choirs. (Question on screen) Why the harp? (Abbie) A girl was playing it at college in the last year and I thought, why not take it up, as it's an unusual instrument. (Question on screen) Why classical music? (Abbie) Well because classical music has basically been going since the medieval period. In fact, it's been going more... Longer than the medieval period. It was around before pop music came along and it needs to be spread to a wider audience, not just people in the older generation because people that go to the PROMS still like it. (Question on screen) Tell us about your audition (Abbie) Well, I auditioned to join the orchestra to play with other people, work as a team. I played two pieces prepared by my harp tutor. So well, quite short and sweet really. The preparation wasn't scary or anything. So they were basically the two and I just started playing. (Question on screen) Any tips for applicants? (Abbie) Make sure you've got your pieces prepared. Make sure they're rehearsed. My advice is, conquer your nerves. And don't stop if you make a mistake just go to straight past it. Pretend it's part of the music and if it's part of the music, you're a piece of cake. (Question on screen)Should other musicians apply for NOYO? (Abbie) Yes, because it gets them out there. It gets them exposed and it gets them a wider... It gives them wider opportunities. And it's a learning curve because learning doesn't stop, and That's it. It gives them more opportunities really. (Question on screen)Do you enjoy being part of NOYO? (Abbie) Yes I do! Especially when it's got the improvisation in it. That's one of the strong points, those impro... I'm just looking forward to what's coming up in the future really; meeting others, playing with them chatting with them. That's it! Abbie's audition footage features her playing Blind Mary on the harp, with some members of the National Open Youth Orchestra team sitting in the background. The video ends with the National Open Youth Orchestra logo.
