The video starts with National Open Youth Orchestra musician Ella appearing on screen. She is sitting in her wheelchair, to which is attached an iPad screen at eye level. The camera zooms in and Ella starts introducing herself through her speech machine. (Ella) Hello, I'm Ella. I'm 15 years old. I like music and travelling and I like to learn new things. I was so pleased with me to get in the orchestra. I play at Bournemouth. Ella is shown playing a digital instrument which is installed on her iPad. The screen shows colourful shapes which represent notes whose intensity Ella is shown controlling with the movement of her head. She is playing Pachelbel's Canon. (Ella) My instrument is on my computer which I communicate with as well. It is called 'Clarion'. I can make different sounds and change the tones by moving my eyes on the screen. It is very tiring when you do it for a long time. Ella's mum Kim appears on the screen. The video shows her face as she talks about Ella's passion for music. (Kym) Ella has had a great interest in music since very young and over the years, I've watched her try and practice the rhythm in her body. She's got physical disabilities but she loves the music and it's always been a great passion for her. The interviewer who is off camera asks questions to Ella. (Interviewer) Do you love music Ella? (Ella) Yeah. Ella's tone is enthusiastic and she nods vigorously. (Interviewer) Does it make you feel happy? Ella nods (Interviewer) Does it make you feel sad as well? (Ella) Yeah! (Interviewer) Does it move you? (Ella) Yeah! The camera zooms in on the screen of Ella's speech machine, through her iPad. Ella communicates by selecting phrases and images on the screen using her EyeGaze, and a female speech voice can be heard as she activates the buttons. (Ella) I always loved music even I was a baby. I tried to use instruments like piano and drums but because of my difficulties with my body, I wasn't able. Kim's appears talking on screen again. (Kim) Through her school we were told about the National Open Youth Orchestra because she started to play this instrument, Clarion, on her EyeGaze which is how she communicates. (Ella) I'm part of a group of lovely people. (Interviewer) And are they all playing instruments like yours? (Ella) No... (Interviewer) A mixture of different instruments? Are there other people playing the Clarion? (Ella) Yeah (Interviewer) How many? Three? More? Two?... One? (Interviewer) Just you... and the other person. The camera zooms on the Clarion and Pachelbel's Canon can be heard. (Interviewer) What did you think of the audition for the National Open Youth Orchestra? The camera is back on Ella, sitting in her wheelchair. (Ella) I think it was tough and scary but I was pleased with myself. They were very kind and helpful. The camera is now on Kim. (Kim) When this came about, I was so excited that she would have an avenue to create music, be with a group of young adults. The next step, you know... She's in a transition from school to college and then you start thinking about what's after college... So this may give her something in the future. The camera shows a difference interface of the Clarion. It shows that the Clarion can produce a range of sounds which the user can choose from with options including Brass Low, Celesta, Flute, Marimba, Organ, Strings High, Strings Low, Warmpad, Xylophone and Zither. The next screen shows the graphic interface of the Clarion, colourful bars which Ella is then shown playing. The soundrack is Pachelbel's Canon. (Kim) Music has opened up the world. Her technology has opened up the world, so the combination of the two... We didn't know that this instrument existed until really recently. So we're just super excited as a family and all of us are supporting Ella in her journey with music and the orchestra. (Ella) If you never try then you will never know. So don't worry; Go for it! The video ends with Pachelbel's Canon playing and the National Open Youth Orchestra logo zooming in in the last frame. It has an icon composed of colourful geometric shapes.
